Week ahead - March 12, 2018
Turning cold at the weekend
Mixed overall

Issued: 0900 Wednesday 7th March 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

A mild and mixed week, but turning colder at the weekend with a risk of sleet and snow

A mixed week ahead but a fairly mild one. Most rain tending to be in the west and it could be windy on a few days too. Into the weekend colder weather is expected to push into the north, this then spreading south and bringing the potential for some very cold weather. There could be some sleet and snow too, although confidence is considered low right now, although is building.

Thursday 15/3/18
Low pressure is expected to be to the west of Ireland on Thursday. Rain is likely to be affecting much of Northern Ireland, northern, central and eastern England as well as southern Scotland. Brighter spells develop further west but with some heavy showers too. A few showers in eastern Sotland where a strong southeast wind continues to blow. Tending to be drier in western Scotland. Highs at 5 to 8C in Scotland and eastern England, 12C in western and southern areas.

Friday 16/3/18
Low pressure remains to the west of Ireland on Friday. There will be some rain in Scotland and northeast England with the risk of some sleet on hills. Drier and brighter for the rest of the UK and Ireland at first, but then heavy showers forming in the afternoon. Highs at 5C in eastern Scotland, 12C in southwest England.

Saturday 17/3/18
High pressure is building over Scandinavia into the weekend. This gradually extends towards the UK and Ireland introducing cooler conditions. Cloud, rain, sleet and snow showers affecting eastern Scotland and eastern England and feeling much colder here. Cooler for more western and southern areas with some sunny spells, although rain and cloud in western Ireland. Highs at 4C on eastern coasts, 12C in southwest England.

Sunday 18/3/18
The area of high pressure is expected to be to the northeast of Scotland on Sunday with low pressure to the south. There is much uncertainty, but it could be that some sleet and snow affects southern parts of the country on Sunday with wintry showers on eastern coasts and hills. Western areas tending to be drier and brighter. Highs at 2 to 5C.

Monday 19/3/18
High pressure could build over the country on Monday. This brings a dry and very cold day. The risk of some snow showers in eastern and southern areas. Sunny spells further north and west. Highs at 1 to 4C.

Tuesday 20/3/18
Pressure may stay high on Tuesday. This brings dry conditions for most with some sunny spells. Perhaps cloudier in Ireland with increasing winds and some rain here. Highs at 2 to 7C east to west.
