Week ahead - November 30, 2017
An interesting week
Battle between mild & cold air

Issued: 1000hrs Thursday 30th November 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Risk of gales

The present cold weather will ease this weekend as slightly milder air pushes in from the Atlantic. Rather dull and dank conditions for a few days, with some stubborn fog locally, and patchy rain. Next week becomes complicated by about Tuesday onward as cold air to the north tries to move back southwards. A generally unsettled spell is expected, with periods of rain, but also a threat of snow in northern regions. Winds likely to strengthen to gale force at times.

Sunday 03/12/17
Weak fronts draped acrss the country produce largely cloudy skies and patchy rain or drizzle. Amounts generally small, but it may stay dull and damp in some areas most of the day. North-eastern Britain may see some cloud breaks and a little sun. A light northwesterly breeze. Some stubborn fog patches in southern areas. Slightly milder than previous days at 6 to 9C for most, nearer 11C in the south-west.

Monday 04/12/17
High pressure centred toward the south-west brings a fairly quiet day. A lot of cloud, and some lingering mist and fog patches for inland central & southern England. A little patchy rain or drizzle around coasts in the north-west, otherwise dry. Best of any bright or sunny spells to the east of high ground in northern Britain. Light west to northwesterly winds, freshening in the north. Highs 6 to 10C.

Tuesday 05/12/17
Low pressure passing to the north of Scotland pushes fronts in from the Atlantic. Most of Britain & Ireland should remain in mild air, perhaps very mild for some eastern areas. A band of rain is likely to affect northern regions, and as colder air tries to move into Scotland it may turn increasingly to snow across the hills, perhaps to lower levels. Blustery winds, possible gales in exposed spots. Highs 5C or below in the north, 9 to 12C south.

Wednesday 06/12/17
Confidence is low. A risk of cold air sinking southwards across the country. A zone of rain across central-northern areas, which may fall widely as snow on its northern edge. A chance that generally mild air may hold on for many areas, with southern counties very likely to stay mild. Brisk winds for some. Highs ranging from 3 to 10C north to south.

Thursday 07/12/17
Unsettled weather is likely, with low pressure close to the British Isles. An uncertain mix of mild and cold air masses may result in some snow in the north, but most likely rain toward the south. Blustery winds, possible gales. Highs 3 to 10C.

Friday 08/12/17
Looking chilly as low pressure drifts eastwards and pulls in air from the north. Some heavy showers, wintry over the hills, perhaps snow to low levels for some. Risk of gales. Highs 3 to 8C.
