Fair to the east

Tuesday
A fine and frosty start to Tuesday. There will be some good spells of sunshine, mostly in central and eastern areas although cloud starts to increase in Wales, western Scotland and southwest England by late morning. Rain and increasing winds moving into west of Ireland. This rain band then spread east into the west of Scotland and the rest of Ireland in the afternoon, eventually reaching western Wales and Cornwall as well as the Isles of Scilly by evening. Remaining fair in eastern areas with more sunny spells in the afternoon. A cold day with highs struggling to 1C for many, but nearer 5C in Ireland and the west coasts of England and Wales.

Tuesday Night
A band of patchy rain crosses the country from west to east overnight, clearing southeast coasts by the morning. The rain falling as snow over the Pennines and Scotland for a time in the evening, briefly being heavy in Scotland. Breezier conditions for all as showers follow into Ireland and the west of Scotland later in the night. Becoming drier elsewhere. Lows at 0 to 5C but temperatures tending to rise for most through the night.

Wednesday
Low pressure is northwest of Scotland on Wednesday with a strong westerly flow affecting many areas. Snow showers becoming more persistent at times in western Scotland. Showers turning to sleet and snow in Ireland and becoming heavy at times in the afternoon. Bands of showers and rain affecting western and southern coasts and hills. A few snow flurries in the afternoon in northern England, but drier to the east with broken cloud. Highs at 3 to 9C but turning colder through the day.

Thursday
Detail is uncertain for Thursday, but a small area of low pressure is expected to pass eastwards, bringing a period of rain to most places, turning to snow on the back edge of this system across northwest England and Northern Ireland, then moving into the Midlands and Wales through the evening and overnight. Clusters of snow and hail showers will follow from the north-west. Blustery winds, risk gale force for a time. Temperatures 1 to 6C.
